After 12 months of environmental monitoring at the Norman Chapel, Durham Castle, the specialist’s report has been published
Together with the University’s Estates and Buildings Department, HL have played a key role in co-ordinating a team of experts who have been looking into ways to slow the decay of this jewel in the crown of the Durham World Heritage Site.
The next exciting project may be to reduce the ground levels on the North Terrace of the Castle and allow the 900 year stone work to begin a controlled drying out. It is hoped, together with sophisticated conservation measures within the chapel, that this will stabilise the delicate sandstone interior.
