Jonathan’s role is to lead and co-ordinate the strategic design process through direct collaboration with key stakeholders. He is passionate about the quality of design and finding valuable and innovative solutions.
With over 25 years’ experience designing and delivering within the educational, commercial, residential, retail and hospitality sectors.
He enjoys travelling, playing guitar and scuba diving.
David specialises in the technical aspects of design delivery through project management of multi-disciplinary teams ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget. With over 25 years of experience in many projects across a variety of sectors, his qualifications are in Architectural Technology.
He joined the practice in 1989 and became a director in 2003. David is responsible for the implementation of BIM across the office. In his spare time David enjoys spending time with his family and trying to lower his golf handicap.
Neil’s role is to lead the design teams from inception through to completion of projects. He has considerable experience of sustainable design technology and its incorporation into architectural projects. His strengths lie within Conservation, Educational, Health, Commercial, Interiors and specialist Housing sectors. Recent projects have been highly acclaimed, achieving National Design Awards.
Having worked in Britain and abroad Neil joined HLP in 1991, became a Director in 2006 and has now over 25 years of experience as an Architect. His spare time is taken up with family life with his two boys. A keen sportsman who enjoys long distance running, travel, fine wine and designer chairs.
Elisa has a passion for design and working with clients to realise their aspirations for their projects. With over 15 years’ experience Elisa has developed strength in carefully designing to meet the client’s budget and expectations. Whilst Elisa designs across all sectors she has built a particular specialism in Education – from Nursery provision to HE and FE institutions.
Elisa uses her experience as a teacher of Maths to assist schools in applying their curriculum demands to the development of a brief and interpreting this to a design that is successful on an operational level as well as being a place to enjoy.
Keith has recently joined HL as a Director, with a focus on growing the business and diversifying the client base. He has extensive knowledge of commercial, retail, housing and education projects. He also has significant experience of leading technical delivery teams for contractors on major design and build projects.
With over 18 years experience delivering a diverse range of residential projects and most recently the largest modular new build student accommodation project in the North of England. Keith is looking to learn from this experience and create new opportunities for HL and their clients.
Keith is very passionate with both conceptual and technological solutions to form an overall sustainable approach, particularly off-site manufacturing and MMC that can benefit the client through efficiency and quality. He believes strongly in sustainability through a holistic design approach, which can bring tangible cost savings throughout the lifecycle of a building.
Keith’s spare time is taken up by his two growing boys and helping with coaching Junior rugby at Durham City Rugby Club. Also a keen cyclist, Keith can usually be spotted along the dis-used railways lines in County Durham, stopping off for an occasional coffee or craft ale.
An associate in the Practice and graduate in Architectural technology. A product of Howarth Litchfield Partnership, Michael has a proven track record in production information, controlling and delivering successful projects across many sectors, including Education, Healthcare and Custodial properties.
Michael offers a pleasant personality to all project teams. Keen golfer and family man.
An Associate of the Practice. Stephen is an award winning healthcare architect with over 18 years’ experience in the design and delivery of projects and has a particular enthusiasm for renewable energy technologies. With a keen interest in the technical and detailing stages of the design process, Stephen likes to oversee projects from initial concept through to completion meaning the early design aspirations and details are realised in the built form.
Outside the office Stephen enjoys spending time with his two young sons and as well as playing snooker, golf and cycling.
Robert Atkinson joined the practice as Senior Architectural Technician and has a wide range of experience on a variety of building types.
During his career he has fulfilled all aspects of a Technician’s role, including making Planning Applications, Building Regulation submissions, preparing working drawings and specifications. He has enjoyed working with contractors, making inspections and working with clients and contractors alike to resolve difficulties whilst maintaining a good relationship and delivery the design intent.
In his spare time, Rob enjoys cycling and spending time with his family.
Andrew is a Chartered Building Surveyor with over 20 years’ experience of delivering a wide range of projects in the construction industry since joining the practice in 1998. Specialising in the repair and refurbishment of existing and historic buildings, he particularly enjoys the challenge of working with Listed Buildings and the Heritage and Conservation skills they require. Andrew takes a project through from its inception to its completion ensuring that a close working relationship is maintained with the client and the project team throughout. As part of his role he undertakes Full Building Condition Surveys, Quinquennial Surveys, Schedule of Repair Inspections, Specific Defect Inspections, Terminal Schedule of Reinstatement, Dilapidation and Wants of Repair Inspections, Expert Witness Reports and Access Audits.
In his spare time Andrew enjoys spending time with his three sons and is a season ticket holder at Sunderland Football Club.
Joseph joined the practice as a Building Surveyor. He has a passion for understanding the story and human impact of a building, how it has interacted with people over time, and how it will continue to do so in the future. Joseph has spent the past few years immersed in a wide range of surveying, project management and contract administration roles, with his work so far spanning the residential, commercial and education sectors with a focus and specialism in historic buildings and their conservation. Joseph has a detailed knowledge of building pathology and repairs which he utilises along with his passion for historic buildings in creating holistic approaches to the care and refurbishment of buildings. He is also keen on understanding and implementing ways to sympathetically retrofit historic buildings to improve efficiency.
In his spare time Joseph enjoys climbing, carpentry, cooking and spending time with family and friends. Currently he has his hands full refurbishing a Victorian townhouse.
Nigel joined the practice as a Chartered Building Surveyor with 10 years’ experience spread across surveying and delivering projects from inception to completion. Nigel has been fortunate to have worked with a number of Listed Buildings and has a keen interest for their preservation and how they can be considerately refurbished to meet the demands of modern-day living. His skill set includes undertaking Building Condition surveys, Reinstatement Cost Assessments, Specific Defect Inspections, RICS Home Surveys, writing Schedules of Works and preparing tender documents. He has also acted as Contract Administrator and as Principal Designer under the CDM 2015 Regulations on a range of projects.
Outside of the office, Nigel has an interest in rugby union and likes to make sporadic visits to the gym. He enjoys cooking, spending time with friends and family and the occasional DIY project around the house.
Clare Corless joined HL in September 2019 bringing with her over 20 years of experience in process and operational office management. Clare’s main roles are co-ordinating bid submissions and ensuring the smooth running of the HL office.
In her spare time Clare enjoys sewing, walking and spending time with her family.
Karen has over 20 years’ experience in finance including working in accountancy practices, as part of an accounts team and on a self-employed basis. She joined the business in 2010. Her role is to support the management team by overseeing the finance function of the business.
In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, reading and walking.
David has recently joined the Practice as a Senior Architect. Since qualifying as an architect in 1995, David has worked in both Edinburgh and the North East on a wide range of projects including large and small scale residential, city centre offices, community facilities and bank data centres. He prides himself on strong, honest working relationships with clients, consultants and contractors to ensure quality build and satisfied customers.
His spare time is taken up with his family, his love of cinema and various hobbies such as creating & selling art and growing allsorts on the family allotment!
Mark’s role within HL is as a Senior Technologist with experience in several sectors. Working closely with the in-house design team and external consultants, Mark delivers projects from initial concept to construction information using 2D and 3D software.
He is part of the BIM team at HL and coordination of its use throughout the practice.
With over 16 years of contract work experience with HL David has joined the company directly bringing with him over 45 years of experience as an Architectural Technician. David’s experience includes undertaking responsibility in all aspects of the profession, including client liaison, surveying, design, design drawings, construction drawings, specifications, contract administration, consultant / contractor / sub-contractor co-ordination, site inspections and liaison with Local Authorities, and other statutory bodies.
During his spare time David has an interest in music, cars / motorsport, football, American football, keeping fit, cinema and travel.
Neil is a Chartered Architectural Technologist with over 15 years of experience in a diverse range of sectors and building types, specialising recently in Education projects. Responsible for production of detailed architectural drawings, specifications and with knowledge of BIM software he works closely with the architects, contractors and other members of the design team to take the architectural design from an early stage and develop it into a fully coordinated package of information and successfully completed project on site.
Outside of the office Neil is a keen cyclist and enjoys walking and spending time with his family. He is also a season ticket holder at Middlesbrough FC.
Paul has over 30 years of experience in Practice, and has been with HL since 1998. His qualifications are in Architectural Technology, and he specializes in the technical aspects of design and delivery of important projects. Paul is part of HL- BIM team.
Spare time is spent with his family, as well as mountain biking and gaming.
Andrew has joined Howarth Litchfield as a Senior Architectural Technologist following a career spanning 25 years, with experience in most sectors including Education, Retail and Residential and Refurbishment. He is a keen advocate of BIM with over 15 years experience in using Autodesk Revit for all aspects of co-ordination/collaboration and production information. His passion within the architectural industry is the problem solving aspect of achieving technical solutions for all projects.
In his spare time, he enjoys pencil drawing, particularly portraits, occasionally picking up the drum sticks, and spending quality time with his family.
James Dunn joined the practice as an Architectural Technologist.
James has over 10 years’ experience working on a wide variety of commercial projects including educational, industrial and sports/leisure.
In his spare time, James enjoys messing with cars, cycling, cooking and generally being outdoors in the Durham dales.

Scott has recently joined the practice as an Architectural Technician upon successful completion of his degree in Architectural Technology BSc(Hons) from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Taken into developing his academic work, Scott has a keen interest in technology and how it can be used in communication for various different projects through effective use of current 2D and 3D modelling tools.
Scott has a keen eye for detail and is excited to make a start and progress his career at Howarth Litchfield.
Outside of work Scott has an interest in Formula 1 and various other motorsports along with playing football. Scott also likes to spend time with friends and family as well as gaming on his home PC.
Agnes joined the practice as a Part II Architectural Assistant after successfully completing her PhD in Architecture and Urban Studies at Northumbria University. Her academic work investigated interaction between domestic architecture and urban form using BIM- and GIS-based quantitative and qualitative methods. Agnes has keen interest in housing developments, creative reuse and refurbishment of historic buildings, and sustainable architecture. She believes that every project should follow evidence-based approach to create human- and community-centred spaces.
Out of the office, Agnes enjoys travelling, sailing (she is a certified Inland Skipper) and photography.
A recent graduate, Ashleigh joined the practice as a Part II Architectural Assistant. She has a keen interest in Commercial Architecture and looks to qualify as an Architect in the near future. In her experience thus far, Ashleigh has worked on projects across a number of sectors including Education, Hospitality and high end residential. She looks forward to continuing her journey in the industry with Howarth Litchfield and expanding her experience in the field.
A North West Ex-pat, Ashleigh is an avid DIY-er in her spare time and enjoys to walk her dog on weekends.
Hannah joined as a Part II Architectural Assistant after completing her Architecture Master’s at Northumbria University. Hannah has a keen interest in residential and commercial architecture, creating unique and innovative sustainable design with a passion for preservation and renovation.
Hannah enjoys the challenge of every project, whatever the size and complexity and is excited to progress her career with Howarth Litchfield and qualify as an Architect in the near future.
Outside of work Hannah enjoys walking, swimming, and travelling, exploring new places. She also likes to set herself challenges from upcycling furniture to creating artwork for friends and family, as well as home renovation projects.
Tom has recently joined the practice having achieved a First-Class Honours degree studying Architecture BA (Hons) at Northumbria University. From his past studies, Tom has found an appreciation for adaptive reuse projects in which a holistic, sustainable approach is key to a successful scheme.
Outside of the office, Tom enjoys going to gigs and following his team, Newcastle United. He also has a passion for touring all the top football stadiums around the country.
Olivia joined the practice as a Graduate Interior Designer after successfully completing her degree in Interior Design BA (Hons) at Teesside University. Her passions lie within creating beautiful yet functional spaces and problem-solving using design. Her work so far has spanned across various sectors, including hospitality, commercial, medical, and educational design. Olivia has a keen eye for detail and considers the psychological effects of interior and spatial design as an integral part of her work.
In her spare time, Olivia enjoys volunteer dog walking, visiting exhibitions, travelling, and spending time with family and friends.
Since graduating from Northumbria University in Interior Design in 2017, Katie has worked across a variety of sectors within the design industry, and in most recent times, the catering sector. She has developed her knowledge through front and back of house design and communicates her schemes through a use of different 2D and 3D software.
Katie likes to keep up to date with the latest design trends and has a passion for sourcing recycled materials.
In her spare time, Katie enjoys watching TV series, socialising, listening to podcasts and walking her dog. She also makes and creates pet accessories and is involved in several local craft fairs throughout the year.
Liam joined HL as an Apprentice Architectural Technologist after successfully completing BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction and Civil Engineering at New College Durham. Liam is determined to develop new schemes so that people can use them to their fullest potential and enhance the users way of living and learning, in all kinds of environment.
In his spare time, Liam plays a lot of darts in his local community, playing for several teams. This includes playing regionally with County Durham Youth team, where he travels all around the North-East of England.
